[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that the design of the company’s next-generation AI chip, AI5, has been completed, expressing gratitude to manufacturing partners Samsung Electronics and TSMC.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on April 15, Musk congratulated Tesla’s AI chip design team on achieving “tape-out” for AI5—marking the finalization of the chip design and its transition to the manufacturing stage. He added that development is already underway for future chips, including AI6 and Dojo3.
Musk noted that AI5 is expected to become one of the most widely produced AI chips in history and thanked Samsung Electronics and TSMC for supporting its production.
The AI5 chip is slated for mass production at TSMC’s fabs in Taiwan and Arizona, as well as Samsung Electronics’ Taylor, Texas facility, with large-scale manufacturing expected to begin in 2027.
The AI5 and upcoming AI6 chips are designed for use in Tesla’s autonomous driving systems and its Optimus humanoid robot. While both Samsung Electronics and TSMC will manufacture AI5, Samsung is expected to exclusively produce the next-generation AI6 chip.
