Alphabiz - Korean Air Pilots Union Approves Industrial Action Amid Seniority Dispute Post-Merger

[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, April 9, 2026 — The pilots’ union of Korean Air has voted to proceed with industrial action amid an ongoing dispute over pilot seniority following the airline’s merger with Asiana Airlines.

According to the Korean Air Pilots Union (KAPU), 80% of participating members voted in favor of industrial action in a ballot conducted from April 5 to 8, effectively authorizing collective action.

The union has criticized management for refusing to engage in discussions over the seniority system, citing provisions in the company’s collective agreement that require pilot seniority rankings to be determined through labor-management consensus. The company, however, has reportedly maintained that such matters fall under its inherent management authority.

KAPU warned that without clear post-merger seniority standards, internal conflicts among pilots could intensify and potentially impact long-term aviation safety, underscoring the urgency of resolving the issue.

The union had previously declared a breakdown in negotiations on the 2024 collective agreement and the 2025 wage agreement on March 20, and has since staged a series of solo protest demonstrations in front of the company’s headquarters.

With management maintaining its position, the union formalized its decision to move forward with industrial action through a general assembly. It is expected to apply for mediation with the labor authorities to secure legal rights to strike.

If granted, the union could proceed with collective actions such as strikes or work slowdowns, raising concerns over potential disruptions to airline operations.
