[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] PYONGYANG, April 9, 2026 — Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister and a member of the Politburo, emphasized the need to strengthen high-level exchanges during talks with Choe Son-hui in Pyongyang, as both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Wang made the remarks during a meeting held at the Kumsusan State Guesthouse on April 9, stating that China is ready to work with North Korea to take the important consensus reached by the top leaders of both parties and countries as a fundamental guideline. He added that Beijing aims to enhance strategic communication, expand exchanges and cooperation, and further consolidate the positive momentum in bilateral relations.

Wang also highlighted that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and North Korea. He noted that both sides will jointly host commemorative events, strengthen high-level exchanges, and expand dialogue and practical cooperation across various sectors.

Choe, in response, underscored that the friendship between the two countries is rooted in their shared socialist system and longstanding traditions, describing bilateral ties as “deep, solid, and sustainable.” She reaffirmed Pyongyang’s firm commitment to advancing friendly cooperation in line with the spirit of the times and the will of both peoples.

She further stated that North Korea will work with China to faithfully implement the important agreements reached by the leaders of both countries, successfully organize events marking the 65th anniversary of the treaty, promote exchanges and practical cooperation across all fields, enhance coordination between diplomatic authorities, and strengthen communication and cooperation in multilateral forums.

Both sides attached significant importance to the outcomes of a summit between Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping held on the sidelines of China’s military parade on September 3 last year. Wang described the meeting as “historic,” noting that it produced important consensus on overarching, strategic, and directional issues in bilateral relations, paving the way for ties to enter a new phase.

Choe also highlighted that the summit significantly strengthened friendship and mutual trust between the two countries’ leadership.

The two sides exchanged in-depth views on current international and regional issues, according to Xinhua. Observers suggest that discussions may have included the Israel-Iran conflict and ceasefire prospects, as well as preparations for a potential visit to China by Donald Trump in May.

Wang’s visit is widely seen not only as an effort to bolster China–North Korea ties but also as part of Beijing’s broader diplomatic move to coordinate positions with Pyongyang on Korean Peninsula issues ahead of a possible U.S.–China summit. Analysts say the visit may also serve to gauge whether Kim is willing to meet Trump and to align on specific agenda items.

Wang is expected to meet Kim Jong Un on April 10, according to sources.
