[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Seoul prosecutors have arrested a Samsung Electronics employee on suspicion of leaking confidential company information for financial gain.
According to the legal community on January 21, the Information Technology Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, led by Chief Prosecutor Kim Yoon-yong, detained employee Kwon [full name withheld], on January 19, on charges including violations of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. Also arrested was Lim [full name withheld], the head of a domestic patent management company (NPE), who allegedly received the confidential information in exchange for promised payment.
Investigations indicate that Kwon, who worked at Samsung Electronics’ IP Center—a team dedicated to patent management—disclosed confidential business materials. The leaked documents reportedly contained information on patents Samsung planned to purchase or license.
Samsung Electronics reportedly filed a complaint with prosecutors after confirming the employee’s misconduct. With the suspects now in custody, authorities are expected to accelerate the remaining investigation.
