[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SK On, the battery unit of SK Innovation, has laid off more than one-third of employees at its battery plant in Georgia, United States.

According to Bloomberg on June 6 (local time), SK Battery America, SK On’s U.S. subsidiary, disclosed that 968 workers—about 37% of its 2,566 employees—were laid off at its factory in Commerce, Georgia.

The layoffs were carried out as part of a restructuring effort in response to slowing electric vehicle (EV) sales and changing market conditions, the company said.

SK Battery America stated that it made the “difficult decision” to reduce its workforce in order to adjust operations to market conditions, while emphasizing that it remains committed to its investment in Georgia and building a strong U.S. supply chain for advanced battery manufacturing.

The Georgia facility has supplied EV batteries to automakers including Volkswagen and Hyundai Motor. It had also supplied batteries for Ford F-150 Lightning, but profitability was affected after Ford Motor recently canceled production of the electric pickup.

Meanwhile, SK Innovation is currently building a second battery plant in Georgia, which is scheduled to begin production in the first half of this year and supply batteries to Hyundai Motor.
