[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] The Seoul Metropolitan Government has imposed 2.316 penalty points on Hyundai Engineering & Construction over a rebar omission discovered during construction of the Yeongdong-daero underground complex.
According to the city, the issue occurred between September and October last year when 일부 main reinforcing bars, originally designed to be installed in two rows, were instead constructed in a single row during basement column work. Hyundai Engineering & Construction identified the problem internally and voluntarily reported it to authorities, followed by safety assessments and reinforcement measures.
Penalty points ranging from 0.210 to 0.716 were also imposed on other firms involved in the project, while subcontractors and engineers may face higher penalties.
The city will finalize the penalty after reviewing objections and consulting an expert committee. If confirmed, the penalties could weigh on Hyundai E&C’s competitiveness in future public tenders, as accumulated points are reflected in bid evaluations and may lead to additional administrative restrictions.
The company is expected to present its case during the review process, emphasizing its voluntary disclosure and subsequent corrective actions.
