[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Minyoung] KFTC Initiates Regulatory Action Against Danggeun Market Over Seller Information Issues

On August 1, the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) began regulatory proceedings against Danggeun Market (also known as Karrot Market) for allegedly failing to adequately verify and disclose seller identity information, which may violate consumer protection laws.

According to industry sources, the KFTC issued a correction order and a report containing sanctions opinions to Danggeun Market in June. This report, akin to a prosecution's indictment, outlines concerns about the platform's compliance with legal obligations. The KFTC is expected to hold a plenary session soon to decide on the specifics and severity of the sanctions. The investigation into this issue initially began in June 2020.

The current issue centers on allegations that Danggeun Market did not properly provide consumer access to seller information. Under the Electronic Commerce Act, platform operators are required to verify and provide details such as the seller's name and phone number. This requirement is intended to help consumers seek redress if they suffer from issues like not receiving purchased goods. However, Danggeun Market reportedly allows transactions based on phone number verification alone, without ensuring comprehensive seller identity information is available.
