[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] A breach of trust worth 11 billion won occurred at NH Nonghyup Bank. The employee is known to have manipulated collateral-related documents while handling small and medium-sized business loans at the branch.
Less than a year after the embezzlement of 300 billion won at BNK Kyongnam Bank, a massive financial accident occurred again in the banking sector.
According to a report by Money Today on the 7th, A, an employee of Nonghyup Bank's branch, was recently put on standby for breach of trust worth 10,947,337,000 won from 2019 to last year.
A exaggerated the value of real estate, which is collateral for some SME loans while handling 10.9 billion won worth of loans at local Nonghyup Bank branches from March 25, 2019 to November 10 last year.
Banks go through an appraisal process of collateral in case the borrower fails to repay the loan. In the process, it was confirmed that A set the transaction amount in the real estate sales contract more than the actual real estate transaction amount, totaling about 1.26 billion won. As the value of collateral real estate has been set high, the amount of loans borrowed by borrowers has increased to around 10.9 billion won.
It is known that there is a high possibility that a third person was involved in the process. This is not because A embezzled the bank's funds directly, but because it was a professional breach of trust that caused damage to the bank by inflating the loan amount and benefiting the borrower. Nonghyup Bank also made it clear in a public announcement the previous day that the details of the financial accident were a breach of trust, not embezzlement.
Nonghyup Bank found A's misconduct through the bank's own audit. Since then, A has been put on standby and charged with criminal charges, and the police have launched an investigation. The National Agricultural Cooperative Federation will begin disciplinary proceedings in the future. An official of Nonghyup Bank said, "We asked the police to investigate A's act because we thought it was intentional."
