The Fair Trade Commission conducts an on-site investigation of China's Ali for alleged violations of consumer protection obligations

[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] The Fair Trade Commission has launched an investigation into allegations that China's shopping platform Ali Express violated its consumer protection obligations.

According to industries on the 7th, the FTC sent investigators to the Ali Korea office in Jung-gu, Seoul last week and this week to secure data on responding to consumer disputes. This is the first time that the Fair Trade Commission has launched an investigation into a Chinese big tech platform company.

Ali Korea is a domestic corporation recently established by Ali Express. The Fair Trade Commission is reportedly investigating whether Ali Express has not fulfilled its consumer protection obligations stipulated under the e-commerce law. Under the Electronic Commerce Act, telecommunications sales brokers such as Ali Express must provide their identity information to consumers and respond with manpower or facilities to resolve consumer complaints or disputes.

Ali Express has recently been increasing its market share in the domestic market. According to the application (app), retail analysis service WiseApp, Retail, and Goods (hereinafter Wiseapp), the number of users of the Aliexpress app was 8.18 million as of last month, the highest since the tally in 2016. This is an increase of 130% compared to the same month last year (3.55 million). Recently, it has expanded its business by entering the fresh food delivery market.
