[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SK Telecom has declined a mediation proposal from the Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee that recommended the company pay 300,000 won per person to victims of its recent personal data breach.

According to industry sources on the 20th, SK Telecom submitted a formal notice to the committee stating it would not accept the proposed settlement.

“We respect the Committee’s decision; however, we have determined not to accept the proposal as it does not sufficiently reflect the proactive compensation and preventive measures the company has already taken following the incident,” the company said. SK Telecom added that it will continue efforts to restore customer trust and prevent further harm.

Earlier this month, the Committee recommended that SK Telecom pay 300,000 won each to 3,998 applicants who filed for mediation. The proposed compensation reflected concerns about potential misuse of leaked information, risks of SIM card cloning, and the inconvenience and confusion experienced during the USIM replacement process. If accepted, the settlement would have carried the same legal effect as a court-mediated agreement. With SK Telecom’s rejection, applicants must now pursue civil litigation to seek damages.

Industry observers note that the company’s decision was influenced by the potential financial impact. If all estimated 23 million affected customers were compensated under the same terms, total payouts could approach 7 trillion won—far exceeding the scope of the current mediation applicants, who represent only about 0.02% of the total.
