[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] SEOUL, May 22 — Kakao is facing a potential group-wide strike as labor tensions intensify, with multiple affiliates already securing the legal right to strike.
According to industry sources, a final decision will hinge on a second mediation session scheduled for May 27. If talks break down, up to five Kakao entities—including Kakao Pay and other affiliates—could jointly launch a strike after union members overwhelmingly voted in favor of industrial action.
Concerns are rising over potential disruptions to Kakao’s services, particularly its flagship messaging platform, KakaoTalk, which is widely used across the country.
However, industry experts expect limited immediate impact on service stability even if a strike proceeds. Unlike manufacturing sectors where production halts can occur instantly, IT services are less likely to face abrupt outages due to workforce disruptions.
