[Alphabiz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Kia's labor and management agreed to build a new plant exclusively for electric vehicles for the first time in Korea after labor pains. It has been about a year since there was a conflict over the size of production, the number of employees, and the outsourcing of some processes.
According to the finished car industry on the 16th, Kia's labor and management agreed to start construction of a new Hwaseong electric vehicle plant in Gyeonggi Province in March on the 13th and produce the first electric purpose vehicle (PBV) in July 2025. Kia's labor and management have held 17 employment-related consultations over the past year since the plan to build a new plant came out early last year. As the construction of the factory, which had been drifting without reaching an agreement, was concluded in a surprise move, PBV, a future food source, became dramatically capable of timely production.
However, it is pointed out that the company, which has to hurry to start construction, has made significant concessions in terms of the size of factory production and the number of employees. Regarding the size of the production, the labor and management stated in the agreement that the construction will be 100,000 units per year according to the company's original plan, but a total of 200,000 units will be produced in the future.
The employees also accepted the union's demands. The company explained that 578 people were needed for the Hwaseong electric vehicle plant in the first round presented to the union. This is because the number of essential personnel for production in electric vehicle factories decreases. However, it was finally agreed to hire 759 people, 31.3% more than the first proposal.
