[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] SEOUL, June 16 — Personal Information Protection Commission has launched an investigation into a personal data breach involving parcel services operated by BGF Networks for CU.
The commission said on June 15 that it has been conducting an on-site probe since June 9 to determine the cause of the breach, the scale of damage, and whether the company complied with legal obligations regarding data protection, notification and reporting requirements.
If violations are identified, the regulator said it will take appropriate action in accordance with relevant laws.
BGF Networks previously disclosed that it detected a hacking attack on June 4 that led to the data leak and has since completed corrective measures. The company announced the breach on its website the following day and reported the incident to authorities, including the Korea Internet & Security Agency.
The compromised information includes user IDs and passwords, names, dates of birth, gender, addresses, email accounts and mobile phone numbers.
