[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Korean Air (KAL) is set to enter the ground handling business in Japan, particularly in Hokkaido, according to a report by Nikkei on December 17. Starting next month, the airline will participate in ground services at New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, Hokkaido, which is a key gateway airport in the region.

Korean Air will provide services including aircraft towing, guiding aircraft on the ground, and handling baggage transport, as well as other ground services necessary for aircraft operations. The company plans to expand its ground handling services to other major airports in Japan following the commencement of operations at New Chitose Airport.

To facilitate this, Korean Air established Korean Air Airport Service Japan two months ago and plans to initially employ 30 people for the operations. This marks a significant step for Korean Air as it diversifies its business operations into Japan's ground handling sector.
