[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] The Fair Trade Commission, which is seeking to enact a platform competition promotion law, is under controversy for holding a meeting even though Google, Meta, and Apple, which are likely to be subject to regulations, are not participating.

According to the industry on the 25th, the FTC will hold a meeting on the 25th to discuss the platform law.

However, global big tech companies such as Google, Apple, and Meta have conveyed their intention not to attend the meeting. Four companies, Qualcomm, Match, Thunder, and Uniquest, will participate. As a result, companies that could actually be regulated by the platform law were not present, and only companies that seemed to have little relationship were present.

The FTC is currently in talks with related ministries to push for legislation of the Platform Competition Promotion Act. At the heart of the bill is to pre-designate large platform operators and impose various obligations to prevent abuse of market dominance.

The industry sees the fact that the FTC unilaterally pushed for the enactment of the Platform Competition Promotion Act and did not disclose the details of the bill as the background of the boycott by big tech companies.

The meeting with a coalition of IT and startup companies on the 9th was canceled because the FTC did not share the draft bill. Last week, the Fair Trade Commission also sought cooperation in legislating the platform law by visiting economic organizations that do not belong to large companies that are subject to regulation.

Although the U.S. government and major U.S. think tanks raise concerns over the Platform Competition Promotion Act being pushed by the Fair Trade Commission, the FTC has adhered to the European Union's pre-regulated Digital Market Act (DMA) model and is pushing for legislation with fast-paced parliamentary legislation as it does not require procedures such as legislative notices or public hearings.
