[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Performance-based bonuses for employees of Samsung Electronics' semiconductor (DS) division have been set at 0%, the lowest ever.

This year, the semiconductor sector alone is expected to suffer a deficit of KRW 13 trillion, making it difficult to pay performance-based bonuses.

According to the industry on the 29th, Samsung Electronics announced the expected payment rate of OPI per business unit.

Employees of Samsung Electronics receive a total of three bonuses a year. It is a OPI paid at the beginning of the year and a target achievement incentive (TAI) given once in the first and second half of the year. Among them, OPI is a performance-based bonus that can be paid up to 50% of an individual's annual salary within the limit of 20% of excess profits depending on the annual management performance of its business division.

In the meantime, the DS division received a maximum of 50% OPI last year (2021) and early this year (2022). However, this year, the performance-based pay rate plunged due to a slowdown in demand for the semiconductor business and a sharp drop in prices. This year, Samsung Electronics' DS division posted a deficit of 4.58 trillion won in the first quarter, 4.36 trillion won in the second quarter and 3.75 trillion won in the third quarter. By the third quarter, the cumulative deficit reached 12.69 trillion won. With a deficit of about 770 billion won expected in the fourth quarter, it is expected to incur a deficit of more than 13 trillion won this year. It is the biggest annual operating loss since its foundation.

In addition, Samsung Display's expected OPI payment rate was 46-49%.

Samsung Electronics will announce the exact OPI payment rate at the time of payment in January next year.
