[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 19th that it recently signed a contract with Greek Capital Marytime Group to build two liquefied carbon dioxide (CO₂) carriers of 22,000㎥. The total amount of orders is 179 billion won.

The carrier, 159.9m long, 27.4m wide and 17.8m high, will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan and delivered sequentially to the shipper from the second half of 2025.

In addition to liquefied carbon dioxide, the ship is designed to carry various liquefied gas cargoes such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia (NH3). Ammonia Dual Fuel Ready (Ammonia DF ready), which can be changed to ammonia-powered ships in the future, has also been applied.

According to the Global CCS Research Institute, the carbon capture and storage market is expected to grow more than 30 percent every year in accordance with the de-carbon policy, with nearly 7.6 billion tons of global carbon capture by 2050. As a result, demand for carriers that transport carbon dioxide collected by sea is also expected to increase.
