[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] More than a year has passed since the labor union of subcontractors of Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.) staged a sit-in strike occupying the dock demanding better treatment of subcontractors in the shipbuilding industry, but the wage conditions of subcontractors in the shipbuilding industry have still not improved, a report showed.

In the case of new recruits, there were still a number of announcements that they would hire at the minimum wage level, and high-hourly notices were only around 10,000 won, barely exceeding the minimum wage.

According to the job portal Worknet on the 4th, company A, which introduced itself as an in-house partner of Hanwha Ocean, is offering 9,620 won per hour to recruit welders by the end of November.

Another partner, B, was also offering 10,000 won per hour to hire forklift drivers for at least three years.

In addition, company C, which introduced itself as a partner of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, offered 9,620 won per hour to recruit painters and engine room seal area monitors by the end of this month.

This is lower than the number of foreign workers currently deployed in domestic shipyards. According to Hyundai Heavy Industries' in-house subcontracting branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union, the basic salary of welders, painters and electricians averaged 2.7 million won per month last year. This is equivalent to 12,900 won per hour.
