[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Seoul, South Korea – September 18, 2025 – Hanwha Aerospace is set to sign a new contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency to deliver 24 additional K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers, further strengthening defense cooperation between South Korea and Norway.
Norway initially procured 24 K9 howitzers and six K10 ammunition resupply vehicles in 2017, followed by an additional order in 2022 for four K9s and eight K10s. With the upcoming delivery, Norway will operate a total of 52 K9 howitzers, making it one of only two European nations, alongside Estonia, to procure the K9 on three separate occasions.
The decision reflects Norway’s growing trust in the K9 system, which has earned recognition for its performance and on-time delivery. While Germany’s self-propelled howitzers were considered, Norwegian authorities ultimately reaffirmed their confidence in Hanwha Aerospace. The new K9 units will be deployed to Norway’s frontline as the nation faces heightened security concerns amid regional tensions.
The deal is also expected to pave the way for broader Korean defense exports to Norway. The country has steadily expanded its defense budget, allocating approximately KRW 15 trillion this year—an increase from last year. Hanwha Aerospace is currently in talks to export its Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) to Norway.
Hanwha Aerospace has been actively pursuing the European market despite the EU’s “Buy European” policy, which limits defense procurement financing to systems with over 65% EU-sourced components. To overcome these barriers, Hanwha has accelerated local partnerships and production. In 2023, the company established its first European subsidiary in Poland and launched a joint venture with WB Group to produce 80km-range guided rockets locally. Hanwha is also building K9 and K10 production facilities in Romania following a package supply contract signed in 2023.
