[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has hired Kim Jong-bae, a retired Army lieutenant general, as vice president of its special ship division.

According to the defense industry on the 9th, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries recently appointed Lt. Gen. Kim as vice president of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' special ship division. Due to the nature of the Special Ship Business Division, which builds ships, there have been occasional cases of recruiting colonels or some generals from the Navy, but this is the first time that an Army lieutenant general has been hired.

Kim is the 36th member of the Korea Military Academy and is a "operational expert" who has served in key posts such as the head of the Joint Operations Division of the Hamdong Chiefs of Staff and the head of Operations 1.

The South Korean military is reportedly preparing to create a strategic command next year that will involve both the Army, Navy and Air Force. The Strategic Command is expected to include units operating various Army, Navy and Air Force weapons, including drones, Army missiles, naval submarines and F-35As.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which is currently booming in the merchant ship market, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, is aiming to give a big boost not only to merchant ships but also to special ships. In fact, military authorities around the world, including Canada and Poland, are pushing for projects to introduce large-scale vessels such as water ships and submarines as geopolitical conflicts intensify.
