[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HMM's performance in the first quarter of this year deteriorated significantly. The HMM is also believed to have been hit by the global downturn in the shipping industry.
HMM announced on the 15th that it had sales of 2.816 trillion won and operating profit of 306.9 billion won in the first quarter of this year. Compared to the same period last year, sales fell 57.7% and operating profit fell 90.3%. Both sales and operating profit fell as shipping fares fell due to the stabilization of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recently, the Shanghai Container Fare Index (SCFI) fell significantly. The SCFI, which averaged 4,851 in the first quarter of last year, fell sharply to 969 on average in the first quarter of this year.
However, HMM is determined to break through the crisis through 'cost reduction'.
