[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Related stocks are on a sharp rise as fears spread that Japan's discharge of Fukushima's contaminated water could also affect local fisheries products.

According to the Korea Exchange on the 7th, Sajo Seafood closed at 5,850 won, up 350 won (6.36%) from the previous trading day. The stock price, which soared to a yearly high of 6,180 won during the day, slipped below 6,000 won.

CJ Seafood also jumped 365 won (10.67%) to close at 3,785 won. It jumped to 3,950 won, which is almost close to 4,000 won during the day, and returned some of the gains.

This seems to have increased concerns among domestic food consumers as Japan pushed for the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It is a view that if contaminated water flows into the current, it can also affect domestic fisheries products.

Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water was used to cool nuclear fuel melted during the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Japan plans to purify contaminated water, dilute it in seawater, and release it into the sea 1㎞ outside Fukushima coast through an undersea tunnel. The discharge is expected to be as early as next month.

The Japanese side claims that the contaminated water is safe, but there is also a movement to hoard food due to the anxiety that pollution of marine products is inevitable because the contaminated water contains various radioactive substances.
