[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] The Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has also jumped into the development of next-generation aircraft using hydrogen as fuel. KAI announced on the 31st that it held a meeting the day before the launch of the 'High-tech Mobility Project for Regional Innovation Mega Project' involving 11 organizations including the company.

The regional innovation mega project is organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and supported by the R&D Special Zone Promotion Foundation, which will discover mid- to long-term science and technology projects in the region and conduct joint research by industry, academia and research. The project is a super-wide cooperative type that includes South Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan, with 5.5 billion won in state funds to be provided for three years until 2025.

The "Advanced Mobility" project, in which KAI is scheduled to participate, is the development of future communicators with hybrid distributed electric propulsion systems based on hydrogen fuel cells. The KAI Commuter stands for a 19-seater short-haul airliner.

In this project, KAI is responsible for the development of hydrogen fuel cell hybrid power system, distributed electric propulsion system, system requirements for the development of low-carbon, low-noise and high-performance communication technology and test evaluation for technology demonstration. Through this, we plan to secure technology based on eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell aircraft.

KAI is developing the NI-500VT, a low-carbon, eco-friendly aerial vehicle that applies a hybrid propulsion system with its own investment in "Future Air Mobility," a key project announced in the "Global KAI 2050’ Vision" announced in January this year.

Also, the future aircraft AAV, which is being studied in advance, will enter the pilot flight of the aircraft from this year to the first half of 2024. This will advance flight control logic and simulation technologies, KAI explained.
