[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hyundai Steel has withdrawn a damages lawsuit worth approximately ₩4.61 billion (US$3.3 million) against non-regular workers who went on strike in 2021.
The decision, announced on August 13, is widely viewed as a response to political pressure from the Democratic Party of Korea, which had called for the voluntary withdrawal of such lawsuits ahead of the pending passage of the “Yellow Envelope Act.”
The withdrawn case targeted 461 members of the Hyundai Steel Non-Regular Workers’ Chapter under the Korean Metal Workers’ Union’s Chungnam Branch. The lawsuit, filed in September 2021, sought compensation for losses allegedly caused when workers occupied the company’s Dangjin Steel Plant and staged a sit-in protest.
Separately, Hyundai Steel has an ongoing lawsuit seeking over ₩20 billion (US$14.5 million) in damages from 180 other non-regular workers involved in the same strike. The company has not yet decided whether to withdraw that case.
