[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) has launched a fact-finding investigation into KT Corp. over allegations of misleading and deceptive advertising in the wake of a hacking incident at rival telecommunications firm SK Telecom.

According to the KCC on July 16, the investigation follows a formal complaint filed on July 7 claiming that KT violated the Telecommunications Business Act by using the SK Telecom incident to mislead customers with false or exaggerated claims to attract new subscribers.

The KCC stated that a preliminary inspection, including an on-site visit to KT headquarters on July 10, revealed that KT may have engaged in prohibited practices, such as providing false or exaggerated information about contract terms and services, and engaging in discriminatory practices among users.

If violations are confirmed, the KCC said it will take appropriate legal action in accordance with relevant regulations.

In a related warning, the KCC also advised consumers to be cautious about potential deceptive marketing practices as the repeal of the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act takes effect on July 22 and Samsung’s new Galaxy Z series launches on July 25.
