[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] At approximately 2:25 a.m. on the 28th, a fire broke out near the No. 1 blast furnace at Hyundai Steel’s plant in Songak-eup, Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, after 300 tons of molten iron leaked from a transport train.

Fire authorities dispatched 22 firefighting units and 66 personnel to the scene, extinguishing the blaze by 4:10 a.m., about an hour and 40 minutes after the incident began.

According to fire officials, the molten iron was being transported internally within the steel plant when a crack formed in a 25-ton transport container, causing the iron to spill onto the tracks.

No casualties were reported, and the fire did not spread to nearby facilities, preventing secondary damage.

Police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident and assessing the extent of the damage in coordination with Hyundai Steel officials.
