[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyundai Corporation has started to strengthen its future growth engine by adding solar power complexes to Japan. It reflected Chairman Chung Mong-hyuk's intention to strengthen his eco-friendly business instead of reducing his dependence on the trading business.
According to Hyundai Corporation on the 1st, it has completed and started operating its sixth solar power complex in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, in March this year. Four years after the first power generation complex was built in Japan in 2019, it has six power generation complexes. The total power generation is 4.2 ㎿ (megawatts) when the existing solar power generation complexes are combined.
Hyundai Corporation is also interested in other eco-friendly businesses. Last year, 'eco-friendly recycling business using waste resources' was added to the business purpose. Hyundai Corporation is looking for start-ups to collaborate through the Seoul Center for Creative Economy and Innovation to start a recycling business.
The reason for paying attention to eco-friendly businesses is that they decided not to rely solely on trading businesses to increase sales. Renewable energy such as solar and wind power is increasing in demand due to the decarbonization trend. Chairman Chung Mong-hyuk stressed at the 46th anniversary ceremony last year that "H3 (new business not related to existing trade) should be steadily excavated not only in Korea but also in overseas bases."
