[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Korea Communications Commission (KCC), chaired by Lee Jin-sook, announced on Wednesday that Apple will introduce Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging on iPhones, aiming to resolve user inconveniences.

RCS is an advanced messaging service compared to traditional SMS or MMS provided by mobile carriers. It supports features such as large file transfers, typing indicators, and read receipts. The KCC has mediated discussions between Apple and South Korea’s three major mobile carriers—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—to address communication issues between iPhone and Android users.

The KCC's administrative guidance includes the following measures:

Releasing a beta version of iOS for iPhones within the first half of this year, enabling the three mobile carriers to test RCS features.
Supporting large file transfers of up to 300MB.

Ensuring continuous consultation between Apple and the mobile carriers during the RCS implementation process.

Currently, RCS messaging is only available between Galaxy smartphone users in South Korea. Once Apple enables this feature on iPhones, users will be able to utilize RCS functionalities between Galaxy and iPhone devices as well.

Previously, file transfers via text messages between iPhones and Galaxy smartphones were limited to MMS with a maximum size of 1MB. With RCS support on iPhones, users will be able to send large files of up to 300MB.
