[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] SK Telecom (SKT) will promote the development of international standards for 'quantum security communication' technology to protect the entire communication process from quantum computer attacks.

SK Telecom announced that it will lead the development of standard tasks for "quantum security communication" at an international conference in the second half of the International Telecommunications Union's Telecommunications Standardization Division (ITU-T) Information Security Research Team (SG17), which will be held in KINTEX, Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do, from the 29th to the 8th of next month.

SK Telecom explained that quantum security communication is a next-generation communication security technology that creates synergy by combining the advantages of two technologies, quantum key distribution technology and quantum resistant encryption.

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) has the advantage of high security strength based on the characteristics of quantum mechanics. However, since it is a hardware-based technology, it is expensive for companies to install and operate physical key distribution devices in each section.

Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is a security technology that utilizes mathematical challenges that cannot be solved even with quantum computers, and can be implemented only by upgrading software without replacing hardware, but if computing technology develops, it can be pierced someday.

SK Telecom said it is studying solutions to integrate and manage the two technologies in order to complement and enhance the shortcomings of quantum cryptography and quantum resistant encryption technologies.
