[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] According to an exclusive report by SBS Biz, SK Hynix’s Yongin semiconductor cluster is set to move forward with a major LNG cogeneration power plant project aimed at supporting the growing energy demands of semiconductor production.

The report said Korea Midland Power and SK Innovation E&S plan to establish a joint venture in July to oversee the project, with construction targeted to begin in December.

The LNG cogeneration facility will provide both thermal energy and electricity required for semiconductor fabrication processes at the Yongin cluster, where SK Hynix is building multiple fabrication plants.

The plant is expected to have a generation capacity of approximately 1.05 gigawatts, sufficient to support Fab 1 through Fab 4 operations. Completion is targeted for December 2030.

The project follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies in June 2024 and marks a significant step toward building the energy infrastructure needed for large-scale semiconductor manufacturing.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix is accelerating development of its first fab at the Yongin cluster, including plans to advance the cleanroom opening schedule to February next year.
