[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Coupang logistics center workers staged a one-day strike on August 15, calling for stronger protections against extreme heat, including guaranteed rest breaks and improved cooling facilities.

The Coupang Logistics Center chapter of the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union held a rally in front of Coupang’s headquarters in Seoul’s Songpa District, demanding “20 minutes of rest every two hours during heat waves, as mandated by law, along with expanded air conditioning and rest areas across all centers.”

Union representatives criticized the company, saying, “Despite revisions to the Industrial Safety and Health Act requiring rest during heat waves, Coupang uses loopholes to avoid granting proper breaks. Workers are forced to sustain Rocket Delivery as if using themselves as fuel, in poorly ventilated spaces without air conditioning.”

They urged the company to apply the rest break requirement to every floor and process in all logistics centers and to install adequate climate control systems.

Coupang responded that the strike has not disrupted operations, with its Rocket Delivery service continuing as normal.
