[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Incheon International Airport Corp. said on the 13th that it will spend about 1.2 trillion won to improve facilities at Passenger Terminal 1 for a total of nine years and two months from April next year to June 2033.

Twenty years after its completion, Terminal 1 of Incheon International Airport has a number of problems such as aging facilities, raising safety standards, strengthening security and increasing maintenance costs. Another problem is that more than 80% of Terminal 1 facilities have expired.

In particular, corrosion is intensifying in the case of mechanical piping facilities at Incheon International Airport Terminal 1 as their durability has expired. According to the corporation, 46 leaks occurred at Terminal 1 from 2017 to 2019. In particular, 12 of the 13 communication facilities in Terminal 1 have already exceeded the durable period (2020).

According to the Incheon International Airport Corporation, the maintenance cost of Incheon International Airport Terminal 1 in 2001 was 4 billion won, but it increased to 60.1 billion won in 2020. Some even predicted that maintenance costs could increase to 164.2 billion won by 2030.

Incheon International Airport Corporation will start a public offering on facility improvement work by the end of this year and start designing it for about three years from 2024 to 2027. It plans to start construction for about six years from 2027 to 2033. Incheon International Airport Corp. predicted that if the facility improvement work is completed, it will save an average of 119.9 billion won in annual maintenance costs and generate 2.6 trillion won in production inducement by 2060.
