[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced on Monday that it has secured an order for nine shuttle tankers from a shipowner in the Oceania region.

The contract is valued at 1.94 trillion KRW ($1.46 billion), accounting for approximately 25% of SHI’s 2023 revenue. The vessels are scheduled for sequential delivery by 2028.

Shuttle tankers are specialized crude oil carriers designed to transport oil from offshore production platforms to onshore storage facilities. To ensure stability during offshore loading, these tankers are equipped with Dynamic Positioning Systems (DPS).

Since 1995, when SHI became the first South Korean shipbuilder to construct a shuttle tanker, the company has established itself as the global leader in this market. Over the past decade, SHI has secured 29 out of the 51 shuttle tanker orders worldwide—a 57% market share.

SHI reaffirmed its commitment to leading the shuttle tanker industry, leveraging its advanced technology and shipbuilding expertise. The company also emphasized its focus on eco-friendly vessels and high-value offshore facilities, such as Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) units, to meet its sales targets.
