[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, July 27, 2024 — An Asiana Airlines flight bound for Incheon International Airport was delayed for nearly 18 hours after a mechanical issue was detected prior to departure in the U.S.

According to reports, Asiana Airlines Flight OZ211 was scheduled to depart San Francisco International Airport at 11:30 p.m. local time on July 26, but the aircraft failed to take off after a defect was discovered in its control system during pre-flight checks.

Asiana Airlines stated:

“During preparations for departure, a malfunction was identified in the aircraft’s flight control system. The flight was delayed to await replacement parts from Incheon Airport.”

The delay stranded 241 passengers overnight. The flight is now scheduled to depart San Francisco at 5:40 p.m. local time on July 27 and arrive at Incheon International Airport at 10:10 p.m. KST on July 28 — 18 hours and 10 minutes later than the original arrival time of 4:00 a.m.

Industry data shows Asiana Airlines’ international flight delay rate is relatively high. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) and the Korea Airports Corporation, Asiana’s international flights had a 32% delay rate in the first half of 2024 — the fourth-highest among 10 domestic carriers. The average international flight delay rate across Korean airlines for the same period was 27.8%.
