[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 16th that it will mass-produce power inductors for automotive electronics (electronic devices) for the first time.

The power inductor, along with the multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC), the main product of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, is a key component that is small but indispensable to supply power to semiconductors, and the amount used in electric vehicles is expected to increase significantly in the future.

On this day, the company announced that it will produce power inductors in electric vehicle cameras equipped with autonomous driving systems. The component is 2㎜ wide and 1.6㎜ long, and is responsible for stably supplying power to semiconductors that process autonomous driving information by preventing sudden changes in electricity. Because it meets the AEC-Q200, a reliability test standard for automotive electronic components that requires a high level of reliability, it can be used in other applications such as in-vehicle advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and infotainment (IVI).

This is the first time for Samsung Electro-Mechanics to mass-produce power inductors for electric devices. There are more than 100 power inductors needed for one car, twice as many as smartphones (about 50).

"The number of payloads will be higher in the future due to the high performance and multiple functions of electronic devices for vehicles. The power inductor market for electronic devices will also grow rapidly to about 12% annually," said a representative for Samsung Electro-Mechanics.
