[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] LG Chem has indefinitely suspended operations at its biodegradable plastic (PBAT) plant in Daesan, South Chungcheong Province.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, LG Chem recently halted operations at the Daesan PBAT plant and began reassigning employees. The company initially planned to move into mass production this year following trial production last year but decided to indefinitely delay mass production due to concerns over profitability.

PBAT is a biodegradable resin that decomposes quickly in nature through microbial activity. It is considered a promising material for addressing environmental issues like plastic waste. Since bio-based raw materials can be used in its production, it also helps reduce carbon emissions, making it a key alternative to single-use plastics.
