[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on Sunday that it held a keel-laying ceremony for four naval vessels at Peru’s state-owned SIMA Shipyard on January 10 (photo). This marks the official launch of the largest-ever defense export project to Latin America, worth 640.6 billion KRW, which was secured in April last year.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and SIMA Shipyard will construct a 3,400-ton frigate, a 2,200-ton offshore patrol vessel, and two 1,400-ton landing ships, with deliveries to the Peruvian Navy scheduled sequentially starting in 2026. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will provide ship design, equipment, and process know-how, while SIMA Shipyard will handle construction. The project holds significance as it was secured through a "Team Korea" collaboration of government and industry, outcompeting countries such as Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.

At the time of securing the project in April 2022, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries was designated a "strategic partner" for 15 years by the Peruvian government and navy. This status positions the company favorably as the preferred bidder for future naval projects. Additionally, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will sponsor the participation of 12 technical personnel from SIMA Shipyard in a two-week "Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Program" at Ulsan University, starting January 13.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte stated, "This keel-laying ceremony marks a highly significant milestone in the history of Peru’s shipbuilding industry."
