[Alpha Biz= Reporter Paul Lee] Following the merger of its real estate subsidiary Kakao Space, Kakao has decided to acquire the key operations of its artificial intelligence (AI) subsidiary.

According to industry sources on the 7th, Kakao completed the absorption merger of Kakao Space, a real estate development and supply company, in which it holds 100% of the shares. Kakao Space will operate under the leadership of the General Manager of the CA Consortium Support Organization as the "Space Team," leading projects such as the Jeju Project. The team will be led by former Kakao Space CEO, Lim Sung-wook. The Space Team is set to oversee projects like the Jeju Project.

Kakao expects operational efficiency improvements and synergies from business integration through the absorption merger of Kakao Space. The total number of Kakao's subsidiaries has decreased by 19 to 128 compared to May last year (147).

Additionally, Kakao convened a board meeting on the same day and resolved to take over the business of its AI research and development subsidiary, Kakao Brain, including its massive AI-based language models and image generation models. The process of business transfer and organizational integration is expected to be completed by June. By combining Kakao Brain's technological capabilities, such as the massive AI language model "Ko-GPT" and the text-based image generation model "Karlo," with Kakao's service strengths, the goal is to deliver AI services quickly.

Kakao Brain plans to focus on healthcare business, particularly in chest X-ray reading assistance AI technology.
