[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Display has filed a new lawsuit in the United States against Chinese display giant BOE, accusing it of infringing on its OLED (organic light-emitting diode) patents.

According to industry sources on Monday, Samsung Display lodged the complaint on April 17 (local time) with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The company alleges that BOE and its affiliates imported and sold display panels in the U.S. that infringe on one or more of Samsung’s American patents.

In the court filing, Samsung Display claims that the allegedly infringing displays were used in Chinese smartphones such as the ZTE Nubia Z60 Ultra and Red Magic 9S Pro. The complaint includes specific product names and images as evidence.

The company is seeking treble damages, arguing that BOE’s actions constitute willful patent infringement warranting punitive compensation.

Industry observers see the move as part of Samsung Display’s increasingly hardline stance against unfair practices such as patent violations and technology misappropriation by BOE.

This case is separate from two ongoing intellectual property lawsuits Samsung Electronics is pursuing against BOE in the U.S. Samsung Display is also pursuing legal action in China, actively challenging BOE and other Chinese firms over alleged patent infringement.
