[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The Hyundai Motor Ulsan Plant 1 will partially halt operations as the supply of transmissions has been disrupted by a strike at Hyundai Transys, a Hyundai Motor Group parts affiliate.

According to industry sources on the 4th, the Ulsan Plant 1 Business Committee held a meeting this morning and decided to temporarily suspend the 11th production line from the 5th to the 8th and the 12th line from the 5th to the 18th. This marks the first time that Hyundai and Kia plants have had to stop operations due to a Hyundai Transys union strike.

The 11th line, part of Ulsan Plant 1’s Line 1, primarily produces Hyundai's Kona, a compact SUV, while the 12th line (Line 2) manufactures the electric IONIQ 5. The 11th line was halted because of supply issues with the continuously variable transmission (IVT) used in the Kona, caused by the strike.

Hyundai Transys’s Jigok Plant, the company's largest facility and the primary site for automatic transmission production in Korea, supplies automatic transmissions to various key Hyundai and Kia models, with approximately 4 million units produced last year. Given an average daily production of 15,000 transmissions, the strike is expected to impact the supply of over 200,000 transmissions.
