SK Siltron Secures $544 Million Loan from U.S. Government for Silicon Carbide Wafer Plant Expansion

[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] SK Siltron's U.S. subsidiary, SK Siltron CSS, has finalized a $544 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support investment in a Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafer plant. The loan agreement, under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program, was signed on November 5, and the DOE Loan Programs Office officially announced the agreement on November 12.


This loan follows conditional approval granted in February, with SK Siltron meeting specific technical, legal, and environmental criteria. The funding supports the production of SiC wafers in the U.S., a critical material for next-generation power semiconductors.

SiC wafers offer higher heat and voltage resistance compared to traditional silicon wafers, making them essential for renewable energy, energy storage, and electric vehicle power semiconductors. With support from both the DOE and Michigan state government, SK Siltron CSS aims to complete expansion of its Bay City facility by 2027.
