[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The Asiana Pilots' Union (APU), which has opposed the merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, has requested that the European Commission (EU) investigate the suitability of Air Incheon as a potential buyer of Asiana Airlines' cargo division.

On August 6, the union announced that during a meeting with EU representatives, they urged a thorough investigation into Air Incheon’s qualifications as a buyer of the cargo business. This follows a visit by the union to Brussels on July 23, where they met with officials overseeing the merger.

The union also urged that if the EU ultimately approves the merger, it should ensure that Air Incheon takes over the employment of cargo pilots, potentially through a secondment arrangement.

In response, the EU clarified that while the sale of Asiana's cargo business includes the existing employment contracts with pilots, they cannot intervene in the employment relationships between Korean Air or Asiana Airlines and their employees. However, the EU assured the union that they would carefully review the merger conditions and keep the channel open for receiving additional information from the union.
