[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, South Korea – April 22, 2025 – KORAIL (Korea Railroad Corporation) has secured a landmark contract for the operation and maintenance of the Manila Metro Rail Transit System (MRT-7) in the Philippines, marking the first time a South Korean company has exported railway operation and maintenance services abroad. The contract, valued at approximately 120 billion KRW, is for a 10-year period.

The agreement, signed in Manila on April 22, follows a meeting between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) and Giovanni Lopez, the Vice Minister of the Philippine Department of Transportation.

Under the contract, KORAIL will manage the operation and maintenance of the newly constructed MRT-7 line, which spans 23 kilometers and includes 14 stations. KORAIL will collaborate with the local company San Miguel Corporation in delivering the services.

KORAIL is set to begin its operations in July, deploying a team of 28 experts for the management and maintenance of the MRT-7 line, which is scheduled to open in December 2026. The project includes the operation, control, station management, and the maintenance of trains and infrastructure through to 2034.

This contract is a significant step for KORAIL, as it expands its global footprint in the railway industry. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which has been supporting the project since 2016, views this achievement as an opportunity to further diversify South Korea's railway operations overseas and promote the country’s capabilities in global infrastructure development.
