[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Seoul, South Korea – April 22, 2025 – SK Telecom has launched an emergency response following indications of a potential data breach stemming from a hacking incident on its internal systems.

According to industry sources on April 22, the company detected signs that certain Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM)-related customer information may have been leaked during a cyberattack that occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m. on April 19.

SK Telecom is currently investigating the root cause, scope, and specific types of data potentially compromised. The incident has been reported to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC). As of now, there have been no confirmed cases of the leaked information being misused.

Upon recognizing the possibility of a breach, SK Telecom took immediate action by removing the malicious code and isolating the affected devices suspected of being compromised. The company has also initiated a full-scale inspection of its systems.

To prevent customer harm, SK Telecom has strengthened measures to block unauthorized USIM changes and abnormal authentication attempts. In cases of suspected suspicious activity, the company is implementing immediate service suspensions and notifying affected users.

Additionally, SK Telecom is offering a complimentary USIM protection service for customers who wish to implement extra safeguards. This service can be applied for via the company’s official website or through its mobile platform, T World.

An SK Telecom spokesperson stated, “We deeply regret the concern this incident may have caused our customers. We are taking every measure to enhance our security protocols and prevent such incidents from recurring, with a steadfast commitment to protecting customer information.”
