[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] On October 1, Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced that it would impose a one-year subcontracting ban on Hanssem for supplying over 6,000 public rental housing units with bathroom mirrors that lack the Korean Standard (KS) certification, contrary to the original contract.

LH plans to review the possibility of filing criminal charges for fraud and obstruction of business operations following the incident.

Concerns were raised in April regarding the installation of non-certified mirrors in the modular bathrooms of LH's rental housing complexes. The mirrors’ KS certification is marked on the back, making it difficult to verify once installed, which has been exploited.

LH investigated the relevant complex and 14 similar complexes where modular bathroom mirrors were installed, finding that uncertified materials had been used in 3,354 units across 11 complexes. Additionally, they conducted further checks on 108 complexes built since 2020, confirming defects in 4,470 units across 13 complexes.

Of the 7,824 units affected, 6,180 were supplied by Hanssem as the subcontractor. LH is also considering filing criminal charges against the construction company responsible for the mirror installations, along with a six-month bidding restriction for government projects. The supervising agency will impose penalties and a three-month bidding restriction for government projects as well.
