[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Baeksuldoga, the traditional Korean liquor brewery operated by Paik Jong-won, CEO of The Born Korea, has officially ceased operations.
According to news reports on May 15, The Born Korea confirmed that Baeksuldoga, located in the Bangbae-dong neighborhood of Seocho District in Seoul, recently closed its doors.
Baeksuldoga was launched in February 2022 as part of an initiative by CEO Paik to create synergy between Korean cuisine and traditional alcohol. The brewery specialized in producing premium makgeolli (Korean rice wine) such as “Baekgeolli” and “Baekgeolli Premium,” using high-quality rice from Yesan and a traditional triple-brewing (samyangju) method.
Although Baeksuldoga aimed to popularize Korean traditional liquor, the business struggled with intensifying competition in the alcohol market and challenges in securing distribution channels. These difficulties ultimately led to the decision to shut down the operation due to lack of profitability.
The facility's utilization rate also declined sharply—from 56% in 2022 and 49.6% in 2023 to just 20.6% last year.
A spokesperson for The Born Korea stated, “It is true that Baeksuldoga has ceased operations.”
