[Alpha Biz= Reporter Paul Lee] Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest foundry company, is set to receive $11.6 billion in large-scale support from the U.S. and can build six semiconductor production plants, not three, Taiwanese media reported on the 11th.

According to a report citing sources, the TSMC has secured 1,100 acres (about 4.45 square kilometers) of land for the plant construction in Phoenix, Arizona. This is more than 50% of the area of the Shinjuku Science Complex in northern Taiwan, which can build six wafer factories.

A supply chain official explained that it means that TSMC can not only build three plants but also expand production in the future. If the site is secured in advance and follow-up negotiations progress smoothly, the company will start building additional factories.

Building a high-tech process semiconductor plant in the Phoenix area can provide close-range supplies to major U.S. customers while reducing geopolitical risks.
