[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics has announced on October 13 that it will provide KDDI, a Japanese telecommunications company, with a 4G and 5G-compatible Virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) solution based on Open RAN technology.

KDDI plans to leverage Samsung's technology to expand its 5G capabilities while also encompassing 4G services. Open RAN is a standard technology that separates the hardware and software of radio communication equipment, allowing interoperability among equipment from different manufacturers.

Starting in 2025, KDDI will enhance its Open RAN infrastructure using Samsung's vRAN solution. Samsung will supply KDDI with a comprehensive network solution that includes the 4G and 5G vRAN 3.0 solution, Massive MIMO technology, and Open RAN-compatible base stations for low to mid-band frequencies.
