[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Minyoung] Korean Air is set to modernize its fleet with the acquisition of Boeing's advanced medium and large aircraft models, the 777-9 and 787-10.

On the 22nd (local time), Korean Air signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Farnborough International Airshow in Hampshire, UK, with Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Won-tae and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Stephanie Pope in attendance. The agreement includes the purchase of 20 Boeing 777-9s and 30 Boeing 787-10s, with an option for an additional 10 aircraft.

The 777-9 and 787-10 are medium to large aircraft capable of long-haul flights to destinations such as the Americas and Europe. These aircraft are expected to play a central role in Korean Air's fleet following the integration with Asiana Airlines.

The 777-9 is regarded as the most stable and efficient aircraft in the 777 series. It features wings made of carbon composite materials, which are longer than those of previous 777 models, improving fuel efficiency by more than 10%. With a range exceeding 13,000 km, the 777-9 can fly directly from Incheon Airport to all parts of the United States. The aircraft has the longest fuselage in the 777 series, typically accommodating between 400 and 420 seats.

The 787-10 is the largest model in the 787 series, capable of carrying 15% more passengers and cargo compared to the 787-9 currently in operation. Its fuel efficiency is over 25% better than that of the 777-200.
