[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On August 26, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore, the intermediate holding company for HD Hyundai's shipbuilding and marine sector, announced that its subsidiary HD Hydrogen has acquired the Finnish fuel cell system company, Convion, for approximately €72 million (about KRW 106.8 billion).
Based in Helsinki, Finland, Convion was established in 2012 and specializes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOEC). The company is one of the few globally with commercial SOFC power generation system technology and supply experience.
SOFC and SOEC technologies are considered core technologies for hydrogen energy, which is regarded as a future clean energy source. Due to their operation at high temperatures, these technologies are technically challenging and require extended development periods, making early acquisition of core technology highly advantageous.
The global market outlook for hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzer cells is promising. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the hydrogen fuel cell and electrolyzer market is expected to grow annually by an average of 30%, expanding from KRW 2.5 trillion in 2023 to KRW 17 trillion by 2030.
In particular, with the anticipated commercialization of hydrogen fuel cells for ships and electrolyzer technology by 2040, the market size is projected to reach KRW 55 trillion.
